Born in Palermo in 1935 and known all over the world for her mafia pictures, Letizia Battaglia has been and still is one of the most extraordinary and acute visual witnesses of Italian life and society, especially in Sicily. Recognised as one of the most important figures in contemporary photography for the civil and ethical value of her work, Letizia Battaglia is not only a “Mafia photographer” but also the first woman and European photographer to receive the prestigious W. Eugene Smith Award in New York in 1985.
