The Night Illuminates the Night focuses on Herman’s work developed between 2010 and 2016. In this period the artist has established a dialogue with the great masters of the Western tradition who, over the centuries, have been representing the Holy Land. Rafael Y. Herman traces this tradition with his own method: shooting photos at night time without any electronic aid or digital manipulation, revealing what can’t be seen with the naked eye. Like the great masters of the past, Herman wanted to put himself in the position of not being able to see the scenery, working in the dark of night. In this condition of deliberate blindness he is able to document reality in a new way.
