Shahzia Sikander is known for her drawings, watercolours, videos and digital animations that take the Indo-Persian miniature tradition as a starting point to develop a new language of “resistance and innovation”. Her works explore a mixture of historical, literary and political subject matters such as geopolitical changes, migration, the birth of nations, religion, the identity of individuals, the pre- and post-colonial condition and cultural restrictions in order to reflect on underlying universal themes.

The exhibition at MAXXI traces the artist’s multifaceted career with a selection of 30 works created between 2000 and today.
